Spotify Launches Fresh Finds Forward to Support the Next Generation of Independent Artists
For independent artists, landing on a Spotify editorial playlist can create an important moment of visibility. But a playlist placement alone does not necessarily build a career.
Spotify is now trying to address that gap with Fresh Finds Forward, a new program designed to provide emerging independent artists with support beyond streaming exposure.
Announced on September 17, Spotify says the initiative is expected to reach approximately 10,000 emerging independent artists every year. Artists who have been eligible for Spotify's Fresh Finds playlists since January 1, 2026 can be invited into the program through Spotify for Artists, with access to benefits for 12 months.
Fresh Finds has already become one of Spotify's most recognizable discovery ecosystems for independent and early-career artists. According to Spotify, more than 80,000 artists across 127 countries have appeared in Fresh Finds playlists over the past decade. The company also reports that nearly 70% of streams within those playlists represent listeners discovering an artist for the first time.
More than a playlist placement
What makes Fresh Finds Forward interesting is that Spotify is extending its role beyond editorial exposure.
Benefits announced by the platform include early access to selected Spotify tools, events connecting artists with Spotify teams and other musicians, access to services such as LANDR and Splice, and prioritized opportunities around selected touring and music-video partnerships.
Some US-based participants will also be able to access free recording time at partner studios.
For independent artists, this reflects an increasingly important reality: getting discovered is only one part of artist development. Once attention arrives, artists still need infrastructure, content, strategy, data and a team capable of turning that moment into sustainable growth.
What should artists do?
Spotify says that artists hoping to be considered for Fresh Finds should continue pitching unreleased music directly through Spotify for Artists.
That makes release preparation especially important.
Before pitching a track, artists should make sure their artist profile is complete, their release metadata is correct, their visuals are professional and the story surrounding the song is clearly presented.
A DSP pitch should not simply say what genre the track belongs to. Give editors context: where the artist comes from, what inspired the record, what musicians or cultural influences are involved, and what is planned around the release.
For independent electronic artists in particular, where thousands of tracks arrive on platforms every day, a strong identity can be just as important as the production itself.
Fresh Finds Forward will not guarantee success. But it is another indication that DSPs are building increasingly sophisticated ecosystems around emerging artists — and that musicians should treat their Spotify for Artists account as a professional tool, not simply a statistics page.
